Conservatives peldge to scrap Stamp Duty

Michael Howard, leader of the Conservatives, has promised to abolish Stamp Duty for the average home in Britain if he gets into power.
He has pledged to increase the current threshold from £120,000 to £182,000.

Howard says this will help young people to get onto the property ladder, and make it easier for young couples starting a family to buy a bigger home.

He says: "Six years ago, you paid £900 on the average house in England and Wales. Under Mr. Blair, it’s risen to £1,800. With a Conservative government, it will be zero. For most families, their home is their most valuable asset. It’s the bedrock of their security, both financial security and personal security."

He says it is time the Labour party stopped using people’s homes as a means of raising taxes by stealth, and it is all part of its detailed, fully-costed plan to give taxpayers value for money.

Howard adds: " We know the pressure that homeowners feel from ever-increasing Council Tax, and we’ll help them by scrapping Labour’s planned stealth tax, the revaluation of homes in England. This will save an estimated seven million homes from being pushed into a higher tax band."
